levels, the Royal mint is also heavily involved in producing commemorative coins, planchets, and many different types of precious bullion metals and medals. British Royal Mint gold and silver coins are that they are being exported to around 60 countries and account for making 70% of their total sales. In 2009 the Royal mint was privatized and it become an executive government agency, i.e., a state-owned limited company fully owned by HM Treasury. Since then the business of the mint has expanded worldwide.

The Royal Mint's long tradition of minting coins is part of what makes their silver coins, gold coins, platinum coins, and other commemorative coins so precious and valuable. All the coins minted are of top-notch quality and are widely respected by all investors and collectors worldwide.

Brtish Royal Mint History

Great Britain's coin history dates back to the second century B.C. when Celtic tribes introduced coins. Around 80-60 BC the first evidence of coins being minted was attributed to Kentish tribes that were minted through casting rather than hammering. When the Romans invaded Britain they set up mints in different parts of Britain and began producing coins for the Roman Empire for more than 40 years. The mint in London briefly reopened in 383 A.D., lasting until the end of Roman rule. Afterward, Britain again minted their own coins. In the coming years, 30 mints were recorded all over Britain, with the London mint being the most prominent.

In 1957, the demand for authentic sovereign coins was rising so the Royal British Mint started minting bullion coins. Up until 1982, coins were produced every year along with the proof version. Eventually, the mint stopped producing uncirculated sovereign coins but still produced the proof version. In 1987, the mint started to produce the 1 oz gold Britannia, with a face value of £100. In 1997, a silver version was also released with a face value of £2. This spawned the mint to again produce previously discontinued, uncirculated sovereigns and half sovereigns in 2000. In 2014, a series celebrating the Lunar Year began production, while in 2016, the mint introduced a new series, “The Queen’s Beasts,” with both a silver and a gold version, named "The Queen's Beasts.”

The Royal Mint first minted 1 oz silver Britania coins in 1997 having a £2 face value. They also minted a gold Britannia in fractional sizes (1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz, having face values of £50, £25, and £10, respectively), and in 2013 introduced a 1/20 oz with a face value of 10p. It also introduced the Britannia silver coin in 5 oz versions with a face value of £10. A silver-proof set was also produced. The 2014 Britannia coins were struck with incorrect obverse information as it was mixed up with the manufacturing of the Lunar Year of the Horse.

The obverse of the Britannia features Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, against a guilloché security pattern. The reverse displays Lady Britannia, standing with a trident grasped in one hand and a shield in the other hand. In 2016, the Royal Mint began minting a new series, the Queen's Beast Coin Series, in gold, silver, and platinum. The entire series was designed by engraver Jody Clark, who, at age 33, became the youngest Royal Mint designer to create an effigy of Queen Elizabeth. The series is among the first from the Royal Mint to display this image of the Queen.
