The New Zealand territory of Tokelau introduces a new silver bullion series with the inaugural release of this absolutely stunning 2018 Tokelau Equilibrium 1 oz Silver Prooflike edition. The theme of the series is as intriguing as the design reflected in this first release. As noted by the mint,

"Harmony has been a popular topic since the philosophers of ancient Asia, who depicted its play with the yin-yang symbol. With the Equilibrium coin, we point out the need for harmony and balance (between technology and nature, civilization and environment, money and time, work and rest, AI and human intelligence etc.) In this series we will depict symbols of balance adapted in accordance with the relevant idea."

Within the rimband are inscriptions "5 DOLLARS . 1oz FINE SILVER 999. At the left are flowering vines, while at the right are depicted electrical circuits.

Contrasting Systems

As the series introduction, this 2018 Tokelau Equilibrium 1 oz Silver Prooflike edition features iconic images of two contrasting systems ‑ one bursting forth in life from nature, the other technology-based, conceived and built by human ingenuity and power. The first constantly derives its life and growth from a network of natural processes. The tree is alive and bears within itself the seeds of its own replication.

The second displays a technological network of circuits that also delivers life to its connections. The concept of this network was derived from humans applying the natural processes they understood of living organisms to non-living systems. Is not the balance between the two based upon respecting their similarities and the interplay between them? Is not technology a tool derived from concepts embedded in living processes to support and enhance the effectiveness of those processes?

Roots & Networks

The obverse displays with incredibly stunning prooflike finish the Ian Rank-Broadly effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II within an inset, set off to the right. The inset has the appearance of a smaller coin superimposed the overall design. Inscriptions include, "ELIZABETH II . TOKELAU." The effigy has a background of flowering vines, providing a nice decorative touch. It also contrasts with the larger design that features a network of electrical circuits. In keeping with the series theme, a second inset displays a manual scale in perfect balance. Inscriptions include, "EQUILIBRIUM" at the top rim and the issue date of 2018 in both Roman numerals and standard Western Arabic numerals.

The reverse of this 2018 Silver 1 oz Tokelau Equilibrium Prooflike edition features a large yin-yang symbol filling the center field. Growing within the yin is a beautiful tree, with its trunk connected at the yang. The yang depicts a network of electrical circuits that also connect to the yin. A narrow rim band at the left displays the same flowering vines as seen on the reverse. At the right rim, the network of electrical circuits are depicted. Inscriptions include, "5 DOLLARS . 1oz FINE SILVER 999."

This inaugural Prooflike edition release of the Tokelau Equilibrium series is limited to 15,000 for worldwide distribution. It is uniquely collectible considering the intriguing series theme and the fineness of its design and production.
