History

This coin is considered popular to collectors and precious metals investors, not only for its beauty and history, but also for it’s limited mintage. The Mexican Silver Libertad rarely exceeds one million coins per release. Contrast this to such coins as the American Silver Eagle, which have an astonishingly higher number. For example, the 2015 ASE release totaled 47.3 million!

Centered on the front of the coin is a beautifully sculpted, relief design of the National Shield, the official seal and current Coat of Arms of Mexico. The shield features an image of a Mexican golden eagle, perched on a prickly pear cactus, devouring a rattlesnake. Circling the central shield is the inscription, ‘Estados Unidos Mexicanos’ (United Mexican States). Surrounding the shield are ten distinct, and smaller shield versions, each representing a different period of the country’s history.

The reverse image is the figure of the Winged Victory standing, wings outstretched, upon a pedestal. This historical symbol hails back to the Mexican Revolution. Represented by the statue standing proudly in the center of Mexico City, the Winged Victory is a symbol of Mexican independence. This design has often been compared to the U.S. Lady Liberty. Behind her rise the two Mexican volcanoes, Iztaccihuatl and Popocatepetl. Surrounding the coin are inscriptions denoting the coin’s weight, purity, its year of mint, and the Mexican Mint’s mark: ‘OM’.
