Viking Series – 2016 Bjorn
The sixth release in the Scottsdale Mint's 15-coin Vikings: Gods, Kings, and Warriors series features the famous Viking warrior, Björn Ironside, son of Ragnar Lothbrok. Having risen as a naval commander, Björn led many raids in France, and into the Mediterranean. As the story continues, the raiding pushed further along the Iberian coast through Gibraltar. The south of France suffered much during these raids. After weathering the harsh winter, they resumed their course into Italy. It is at this point where the historical background for the design of this coin begins.
Having taken the Italian city of Pisa, the raid continued inland to the walled city of Luna. Their attempts to breach the city walls failed, but their resolve did not! Though the recounting of what follows is told differently depending on sources followed. As pictured on the coin's design, a plan was contrived to obtain entrance into the city walls by trickery.
Word was sent to the Bishop that Björn had fallen deathly ill, and made known his desire to convert to Christianity, but had died before he could receive the sacrament. The Bishop allowed his body to be brought into the chapel. However, once inside, he jumped from up from his coffin and was able to get to the gates and open them. The sacking of the city then followed as the Viking warriors stormed in.
This coin's design is certainly unique among the series, serving as a pictograph telling the story. As with the previous releases, the combination of high-relief, texturing, and shading was employed to create this truly one of a kind design.
