Viking Series – 2016 Harald Fairhair
This fifth release in the Scottsdale Mint’s 15-coin Vikings: Gods, Kings, and Warrior series features
King Harald Fairhair. Considered by many medieval historians as the first king of Norway, Harald Fairhair is believed to have reigned from circa 872-930. Most of what is known of his life is based upon centuries old poems recounting his sagas and mighty battles.
As with the previous releases in the series, the combination of high-relief, texturing, and shading is employed to create completely unique designs. Each seeking to open our view into a different world and unveil the particular characteristics of the featured subject.
Standing with the bearing of a conquering king, Harald Fairhair’s heraldic sagas are well represented by this strong depiction. Though not of massive frame, he shows the uncompromising strength of a warrior, with sword and shield raised. His aging face show the harsh effects of both the frigid Norwegian winters and the battle. Yet, he is still set and readied to fight for a united Norway and defend it to the end.
He is shown standing in front of the Sverd i fjell, a monument erected in 1983. It is composed of three bonze swords standing 10 meters tall, planted firmly in a small hill. The monument commemorates the Battle of Hafrsfjord (c. 872), in which King Fairhair brought all of Norway together under one crown, as a united nation.
This coin’s design displays a balanced mix of finely detailed textures and masterful use of tones and shading through the antiqued finish. This is a coin to proudly display, as it depicts in a single frame a sense of the sagas of this warrior king.
