The brief Falklands War was declared on April 2, 1982 by the Argentine President, after a relatively small troop had taken occupation of the Falklands at South Georgia Island. The tensions between the United Kingdom and Argentina regarding territorial rights over the Islands had been very long standing, which finally escalated to direct armed conflict. Both Naval and land battles ensued, and lasted 74 days, at the cost of significant loss of life on both sides. Argentina ultimately surrendered on June 14, 1982, and the Falklands continued under British rule.
