Knights’ Tales. The set will ultimately contain 5 distinctively unique coin designs. Each will present one of five essential virtues the Knights of the Middle Ages were sworn to uphold.

The first release, 2019 Knights’ Tales ‑ Chivalry 15 g Copper Brilliant Uncirculated edition, will be the introduction to the following four. The code of chivalry consisted of the highest combination of the warrior ethos, piety, nobility, and gallantry. These were the days when warriors arose from the nobility of the land to proudly stand in battle against the scourges that threatened their country!

Knights’ Tales ‑ Chivalry

The inaugural release of the series features Maximilian I, who at 18 years old married Mary of Burgundy, which provided him the position of Duke of Burgundy and Sovereign of the knightly Order of the Golden Fleece. This Order consisted of but 30 men, but their renown became legendary. Throughout the ensuing years, Maximilian I began to be considered by his subjects as somewhat of an embodiment of the code’s high values.

The obverse features a strikingly detailed portrait of Maximilian I, now Arch Duke of Austria and Holy Roman Emperor. Positioned to the left, Maximilian, in full regalia, raises a lance before him. In the background, is an unfurled scroll. To the right, his coat of arms is held by a crowned heraldic lion. Inscriptions include “10 EURO” at the top rim, and “REPUBLIK OSTERREICH 2019” at the bottom. The design is accented by a double-beaded border tightly encircling the rim, adding a final touch of distinction to this very handsome and regal design.

The Joust!

The reverse depicts a very active jousting tournament scene. Maximilian I was famous for his great skill and bravery displayed during such tournaments. Featured here is a knight in full armor, riding high upon a decorated steed in full gallop. The knight’s lance is lowered into position for the strike, even as his shield is raised to defend. The background shows a festive display of excited spectators in the stand anticipating the glancing blow of the lance and the shout of victory. The distinctive double-beaded border at the rim frames the scene nicely.

This inaugural 2019 Knights’ Tales ‑ Chivalry 15 g Copper Uncirculated edition will be joined by four additional releases, which together will honor the heroic values by which knights lived their lives. Each Uncirculated coin will come in protective packaging. These copper releases are designed to fit into the Knights’ Tales Collector Album along with the three 825th Anniversary 1 oz Silver coins – Leopold V, Wiener Neustadt and Robin Hood.To complete the set, be sure to order the Silver Proof and Special Uncirculated versions of the Chivalry coin as well!

Maximilian I ‑ The Man in his Times

Born in 1459 at Wiener Neustadt, Austria, Maximilian rose quickly in prominence as directed by his father, Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor. In 1486, Maximilian was elected to be King of the Romans. He then rose to Arch Duke of Austria in 1493. Upon the death of his father, Maximilian ascended to Holy Roman Emperor in 1508.

These were very tumultuous times, and as with all who ascend to high rank and power, not all of Maximilian’s historic exploits can be considered guided by the code of chivalry. Now in 2019, and upon the 500th anniversary of his death, we honor Maximilian’s many great accomplishments, his high ideals, and commitment to uphold this code.
