2019 Silver 5 oz ATB War in the Pacific Guam
The third 2019 America the Beautiful 5 oz coin release features the War in the Pacific National Historic Park. Established in 1978 on the island of Guam, the War in the Pacific commemorates the thousands of brave soldiers who fought and sacrificed in the Pacific Theater of World War II. The park preserves former battlefields, gun placements, trenches, caves, and historic structures. By viewing these in their original settings, generations to come may understand something of the great cost suffered by those who stood against the aggression in the Pacific. This 2019 Silver 5 oz ATB War in the Pacific Guam is a fine tribute to the War in the Pacific National Historic Park in Guam. It also seeks to honor those thousands of men and women whose live’s were lost during those terribly difficult times.
Asan Bay Overlook & Memorial Wall of Names
Among the most iconic memorials in the park is the Asan Bay Overlook. Its views of the landing beaches and bronze sculptures depicting the events that took place during the battle for Guam are truly amazing. Then, there is the Memorial Wall of Names. Listed on this sobering memorial wall are the individual names of the soldiers who died in battle, as well as the locals who died and suffered under the Japanese occupation.
Not only does this spectacular park preserve battle‑related artifacts and tributes, it also preserves the natural beauty of the area. White‑sand beaches, majestic palm trees, and lush vegetation are found throughout the park. Coral reefs just offshore offer divers and snorkelers a chance to enjoy the underwater beauty up close. The park also offers many opportunities for anglers to enjoy the plentiful marine life of the area. Visitors to the site are never short of things to do and things to see.
Storming the Beach
The obverse of this 2019 Silver 5 oz ATB War in the Pacific Guam coin displays the bravery of the soldiers storming the beach at Asan Bay in 1944. They were sent to support the troops already ashore. Each knowing the violence and horror that awaited their arrival. They were there to liberate Guam from Imperial Japanese occupation. At great cost, this liberation would eventually be achieved in August of that year.
The pictured scene unfolds as one soldier slowly crawls along the sandy beach with rifle leveled, covering the next, who jumps from the landing craft towards the beach. This, of course is repeated by one soldier after another until each craft has been emptied. The narrow rim-band includes the inscriptions, “WAR IN THE PACIFIC . GUAM . 2019 . E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
As with the previous ATB release of Mariana Islands American Memorial Park, this 2019 Silver 5 oz ATB War in the Pacific Guam edition helps us to pause when considering the struggles and victories of such turbulent times of history. These memorials seek to honor those lives and continue to tell the heroic stories of bravery and commitment.
