This 2020 Tokelau Icon 1 oz Silver Prooflike coin introduces a brand new Tokelau series. Produced by Pressburg Mint, we can be sure of each coin's production quality. As with other on-going Tokelau series, Icon will present intriguing subjects and designs.
One such design aspect includes a pattern overlayed on the featured image. The effects of the pattern reveals the hidden word. Depending on how the coin is angled while viewing, the hidden word is visible reversed out of the featured image, or superimposed. As noted by the mint,
"Icon in many meanings ‑ as a Greek word for image, as a religious work of art, as a characteristic of a famous person or a thing that represents something of importance ‑ all is depicted in this coin ‑ at a first glance or only at a closer look. Each release in the series will be based on an iconic piece of historic or contemporary art."
For the series' introduction, a classical art statue was chosen. Featured is the beautiful sculpture of Diana. The stunning Diana is represented in Roman mythology as a goddess ‑ patroness of the Moon, the countryside, crossroads, and hunters. The work was sculpted in marble in 1853 by American artist, Hiram Powers at the request of author Lucius Manlius Sargent. The sculpture is now displayed in the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The piece is truly iconic in its graceful beauty.
As a legal tender offering of Tokelau, the coin's obverse displays the Ian Rank-Broadly effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The background is filled with a wave-like pattern of oscillating lines, which makes the effigy even more prominent. Inscriptions include, "TOKELAU . 5 DOLLARS . 2020 . 1 OZ FINE SILVER . ELIZABETH II." A decorative Grecian style border encircling the rim nicely frames the design.
The reverse of this 2020 Tokelau Icon 1 oz Silver Prooflike coin features a head profile of Diana, as inspired by the sculpture. Overlaying the image of Diana in the center field are series of lines, forming geometric patterns. When the coin is angled in the light, the hidden word "ICON" is revealed either reversed out of the image, or superimposed. As with the obverse, the same Grecian style border encircles the rim.
