Following the highly successful 2018 launch of the Samoa Seahorse series with the remarkable "abstract stain-glass like design," this 2019 1 oz Silver Samoa Seahorse BU edition features a stunningly different presentation.

Exceptional Stylized Design

The obverse beautifully displays the Samoan crest filling nearly the entire field. The rim is tightly-encircled by a distinctive beaded band. The inscriptions include "SAMOA . 2019" at the top rim. To the left is, "1 TROY OUNCE," and to the right is "999 FINE SILVER." the denomination of 2 TALA rests at the bottom rim.

With some of the finest detail imaginable, the reverse displays a single seahorse swiming in the open tropical waters of the Samoan Islands. The exceptional beauty displayed in the overall scene is not only from the detail, but also the striking way in which each element comes together. Certainly, the intriguing natural markings of the seahorse is the feature, while the bold, Polynesian-styled ocean waves wonderfully frame the scene. The random air bubbles rising from the ocean floor provide a sense of depth, as well as movement. The final touch is the decorative partial rim band at the top displaying hints of swaying seagrass. No inscriptions appear on the reverse.

A Most Curious Sea Creature

And then, there is the subject of the coin, the seahorse. The seahorse's inclusion on this South Pacific island coin should be no surprise. Samoa has the perfect habitat for these tropical sea creatures to thrive. And thrive they do!

This is certainly one of the more curiously-shaped creatures of the ocean. With its head shaped somewhat in the form of a horse head, the common name designation is quite appropriate. When asking children which is their favorite sea creature, the seahorse is always one of the top five. Highly recognizable, and included in countless children's books and cartoon series, kids just seem naturally to love them. Although, the actual story of the sea creature is really more fascinating than the cartoon version.
