What is a black hole?

Black holes are one of the most well-known yet least understood objects in the cosmos. According to NASA:

"A black hole is a place in space where gravity pulls so much that even light can not get out. The gravity is so strong because matter has been squeezed into a tiny space. This can happen when a star is dying. Because no light can get out, people can't see black holes. They are invisible. Space telescopes with special tools can help find black holes. The special tools can see how stars that are very close to black holes act differently than other stars."

The obverse of the coin depicts the Ian Rank-Broadly effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at the center of a black hole. All around the obverse, the inscriptions: "ELIZABETH II . NIUE . 5 DOLLARS . 2011," "UNIVERSE" and the AG 999 purity.

The reverse of the coin shows a colorful representation of the appearance of a black hole. The concave center imitates the absorption of the surroundings by a black hole. At the bottom of the reverse, the inscription: "BLACK HOLE." A genuine meteorite is inserted into the concave center.
