Kennedy Half Dollar 90% Silver Circulated

This item is for $1 dollar face value 1964 Kennedy half dollars in circulated condition.

Few coins hold such memories for Americans as the Kennedy half dollar, even though the denomination is now rarely seen in circulation. The coin remains highly popular with Americans, crossing all age, demographic, and ideological boundaries.

John F. Kennedy was the 35th President of the United States, inaugurated in 1961. He was born in 1917, and was youngest person elected to the office. On November 22, 1963, however, things would change dramatically. That day, during a visit in Dallas, Texas, he was assassinated during an open motor parade.

While he was not the first President to be shot while in office, it was the first time it was possible for media to report almost instantly on the event. Within hours, news of the assassination had quickly spread, sending shock waves across the nation and the world.

The choice to commemorate President Kennedy through the issue of a revised circulating coin was quickly made. It was finally determined the denomination would be the half dollar. The previous design, featuring Benjamin Franklin, had been minted since 1948. The Kennedy half dollar was first released in 1964.

The obverse features a left-facing bust of President Kennedy. Inscriptions include, "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the date. The reverse features the Presidential Seal. Above the seal is "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA." Below the seal is the denomination, "HALF DOLLAR." Closely encircling the seal are fifty stars, representing the fifty states in the Union.
