The Gold Eagle was introduced in 1986 as the official Gold bullion coin of the United States of America of United States Mint. Bullion investors and collectors immediately took advantage of the opportunity to invest in U.S. legal tender gold coinage.
This beautifully stunning coin was globally received with high praise upon its inaugural 1986 release. Fine bullion coin collectors and bulk stackers alike prize American Gold Eagles. This value is recognized not only for their stability even in unstable times, but also for their beauty. Of course, that beauty is even more appreciated when you closely consider the history and story the design represents.
The obverse design is based on the Saint-Gaudens' Double Eagle, introduced into circulation in 1907. The Double Eagle was produced from 1907-to 1933, and to this day is considered the most beautiful design ever produced by the U.S. Mint. Saint-Gaudens' iconic design was adapted to feature on the original Gold American Eagles.
Lady Liberty stands gracefully, yet proud and strong under the banner of Liberty. With the first rays of the sun rising behind her, she looks out at the dawn of a bright future. Elegantly draped with a flowing, full-length gown, Liberty displays strong, resolute confidence. The glory of her long hair is tossed beautifully in waves behind her, captured in the breeze.
In her right hand, she raises a lighted torch high before her. The torch not only lights the path forward but also bears witness to the liberty and freedom for which she stands. In the same manner, our Lady grasps the olive branch of peace in her left hand. She holds it out prominently before the Nations of the world, to make clear just how highly she prizes that peace.
The newly updated reverse of the coin features a highly-detailed, profiled headshot of a magnificent bald eagle. Every aspect of the new featured Eagle design reflects a sense of watchful strength. Inscriptions include, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. E PLURIBUS UNUM. IN GOD WE TRUST. 50 DOLLARS. 1 OZ. FINE GOLD."
Congress, under the 1985 American Eagle Bullion Program, authorized the production and manner of distribution of the coins. President Ronald Reagan was quick to sign it into law. The intent of the program was to provide a convenient and cost-effective means for investors to purchase precious metals. The U.S. Government guarantees the weight, content, and purity of Gold Eagles. These were the first legal tender gold bullion coins to be produced in the U.S. since 1933.
