The Tokelau Chronos series is now entering its 7th annual release cycle for its silver coins, but this is only the second year for the gold coins. The series was originally launched in 2015 as a Gold Round without legal tender status. This seventh release bears a legal tender of $10 NZD. The series has maintained the same theme from the beginning, while the design has undergone significant changes with each release. And this 2022 Tokelau Chronos 1oz Gold BU edition is certainly one of the most intriguing of the series to date. The proof-like finish adds shine and depth to the coin.
As a legal tender offering, the obverse displays the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II created by Ian Rank-Broadley. Inscriptions encircling the rim include, "5 DOLLARS . ELIZABETH II - TOKELAU." Two digits on either side of the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II feature highly detailed clock images that display the inner workings of their mechanisms. The background is filled with a repeating, highly ornate geometric pattern, which is almost hypnotic in its effect. An attractive laurel wreath rim band finishes the overall design quite nicely. The coin's border is a series of rectangles with a diamond-shaped empty space where the clock's numbers are.
The reverse of this 2022 Tokelau Chronos 1oz Gold BU edition features the face of a clock. The hour numbers are displayed in Roman numerals, except for the 12, which is replaced with the Au symbol for Gold. Consistent with the Chronos series, the displayed time on the clock is 5 minutes to midnight. The clock's center features a floral-like design while the main background features intersecting circles. The inscription is "10 DOLLARS." The rim band is the same design as the obverse.
