Background

The United States issued the Liberty Head double eagle, commonly called the Coronet Double Eagle, as a twenty-dollar gold coin. After a few internal disputes at the Philadelphia Mint, the double eagle was unveiled in 1850. This is now only one 1849 double eagle in storage at the Smithsonian.
