The obverse side of the 2024 1 oz Niue Maori Silver Coin features Moari mythology’s tale of the beginning of the world and how it currently operates. The imagery includes Rangi and Papa, the primal couple, who are signified as the Sky father and Earth mother. The display revolved around the story of the warm and loving embrace of the two who were separated to nurture humankind and their kids.
The reverse of the Silver coin displays the bust effigy of King Charles III, which was introduced in bullion coins after the passing of the H. M. Queen Elizabeth II. The puppet, designed by Jody Clark, depicts the head and neck of the King with intricate details. The effigy is surrounded by the inscriptions, “CHARLES III. NIUE. TWO DOLLARS. 2024.”
Rangi and Papa, or Ranginui and Papatūānuku, are the primal couple from the Maori mythology that explains the origin of the world and the Maori people. The names are also translated and mentioned as the Sky father and the Earth mother. The elements of the world, like water, insects, reptiles, food, storms, and wind, are referred to as the offsprings of Rangi and Papa. Rangi and Papa are locked together in a tight embrace, forcing the kids to live in a cramped darkness between them. Find out more about the story here.
