$34.65The Royal Mint's Shengxiào Collection was unveiled in 2014 to an exceptionally pleased global bullion market. The new series introduced the uniquely stylized designs of Wuon-Gean Ho. This brilliant, and highly accomplished British Chinese artist and printmaker was honored by the Royal Mint with this series commission. She has distinguished herself yet again on this beautifully stylized second design for Great Britain's Lunar bullion coin series.
The second release in the Royal Mint's Shengxiào Collection celebrates the 2015 Year of the Sheep. According to the traditions of the Chinese lunar zodiac, the Year of the Sheep (or Goat) harkens a year of promise and prosperity for all born under the sign's influence. Taking the best traits attributed to the animal sign, the sheep is considered to be somewhat calm, caring, compassionate, and empathetic. This tends to their also having deep artistic gifting.
The obverse design for the series features Ian Rank-Broadley's beautiful portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Encircling the image at the rim are the inscriptions, "ELIZABETH II -D.G.-REG-FID-DEF-2 POUNDS."
This beautifully styled reverse design features two horned sheep. The larger one in the foreground has his head turned, looking back over his right shoulder. This angle displays his head's full profile. He is absolutely magnificent, with just enough detailing to reveal a calm strength.
His profile shows one curved horn, which is also nicely detailed, as is his curly wool coat. In the background, a short distance to the right, is the second sheep. Somewhat smaller in stature, and perhaps a female, she turns her head back to her left. She gazes long at the larger animal behind her.
This is a wonderful, poignant scene that, interestingly, captures the full range of traits associated with the Chinese zodiac sign of the sheep.
One of the traditions often included in celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year is that of gifting. The giving of a thoughtful token is accompanied with the hope for good fortune to bless the recipient's home. What could be more thoughtful than the gift of a fine silver coin designed to honor the Chinese New Year? This coin is released in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
This 12-year Chinese lunar calendar series will continue to astound us with each new release. And that includes this 2015 1 oz Silver Lunar Sheep Royal Mint BU coin. It will most certainly make a great addition to your Lunar coin collection!
