The obverse side of the 1 oz American Silver Eagle coin depicts the portrayal of Lady Liberty walking with the rising sun in the backdrop. This design by Adolph Weinman was introduced in 1986 but was designed in 1916 and is termed “Walking Liberty.” The portrait of Lady displays her being draped in the American flag while holding an olive branch in one hand. The inscriptions surrounding the effigy are “LIBERTY,” the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year below the imagery.

The reverse design of the American Silver Eagle varies based on the year of the issue. The Type 1 design by John Mercanti, utilized from 1986 to 2021, depicts the heraldic eagle with 13 stars above it and the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” engraved on a ribbon held by the eagle in its beak. The Type 2 design by Emily Damstra, utilized from 2021 to the present, displays the American bald eagle with outstretched wings clenching on an olive branch as it approaches landing.

Both designs include the eagle encircled by identifying marks for face value, purity, and country of issue: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. ONE DOLLAR. 1 OZ. FINE SILVER.”
