The first 2018 America the Beautiful 5 oz Silver coin release features Michigan's enchantingly gorgeous Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Consisting of 42 miles of Lake Superior's shoreline, the entire area of Pictured Rocks covers over 73,000 protected acres. Stunning views of deeply multi-colored sandstone cliffs running along the shores gave rise to the Lakeshore's name.
The coin's design features Chapel Rock sandstone arch formation. This is one of the most distinctive examples of ancient sandstone archways. The archways are formed through the persistent ravages of erosion over the ages. Chapel Rock archway most recently succumbed to these forces in the 1940's, by the collapse of the archway that connected it to the mainland. A lone white pine stands atop the rock. Interestingly, its root system is still connected to the mainland.
The view is from Chapel beach, looking out over Lake Superior, where the placid waters are shown lapping in the background. This is truly an amazing and pristine example of why protected National sites are designated by Congress and maintained by the National Park Service.
The second 2018 America the Beautiful 5 oz Silver coin release features Wisconsin's Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Also known as The Jewels of Lake Superior, Apostle Islands consists of 21 islands, and 12 miles of mainland off the northern tip of Wisconsin.
Established in 1970, the protected areas cover 69,372 acres of some of the most beautiful lakeshore beaches, cliffs, and coves in the U.S. Of the many distinctive attractions drawing visitors to Apostle Islands are the lighthouse tours. Eight historic Lighthouses of the Apostles are in place across six of the Islands. Six of the eight are still in service.
The scene pictured on the reverse is a view depicting the sheer cliffs and sea caves of Devils Island. A stand of trees grace the cliff top, and the Devils Island Lighthouse is in the background. Upon the water is a kayaker paddling the smooth waves of the lakeshore. The detail on the cliffs really highlight the weatherworn sandstone.
The third 2018 America the Beautiful 5 oz Silver coin release features Minnesota's Voyageurs National Park. Named for the historic French-Canadian fur traders, who bravely navigated these interconnected waterways. Voyageur in French actually means “traveler,” which these early traders and settlers definitely were. The waterways of Voyageurs were a vital part of the fur trade route into the Northwest territories.
The history of Voyageurs preceding its establishment as a National Park in 1975 is fascinating. Looking back 250 years, we see the trade routes becoming more established. These navigable natural waterways clearly made way for a rich history to evolve throughout the region. The design of this 2018 Silver 5 oz ATB Voyageurs Minnesota coin is a great tribute to that history!
The fourth 2018 America the Beautiful 5 oz Silver coin release features Cumberland Island National Seashore in Georgia. Established as a National Seashore in 1972, it is the largest of the group of four barrier islands known as the Golden Isles of Georgia. Cumberland can be reached only by boat, and the main entry is through St. Marys waterfront Ferry service. Visitors coming to the island are there to enjoy its natural beauty in its primitive, undeveloped state. Cumberland has the most diverse ecosystems of the four barrier islands.
The coin's design is elegant in its presentation, prominently featuring a snowy egret. A wading bird, the beautiful snowy egret has found a welcome nesting habitat in Cumberland. Chosen to feature on this coin, the egret represents the large and growing number of wildlife species that find protected habitats for seasonal nesting here.
The fifth and final 2018 America the Beautiful 5 oz Silver coin release features Rhode Island's Block Island National Wildlife Refuge. The island is named after Dutch trader and navigator, Adriaen Block, who in the early 1600's conducted extensive coastal explorations. Located 12 miles off the coast of Rhode Island, Block Island hosts two historic lighthouses, positioned at opposite ends of the island.
In recognition of its strategic position in the migratory path in the Atlantic flyway, Block Island was established as a Natural Wildlife Refuge in 1973. It provides a vital environment for over 70 confirmed species of migratory songbirds. The island is recognized worldwide for its protected wildlife habitat, and the refuge it provides.
The coin's design is absolutely stunning! Capturing the rugged beauty of the rocky Atlantic coastline, the rolling surf recedes to expose the rough glacial till. The scene pictured is from the beach at Cow Cove, looking toward Sandy Point. The true focus, however, features a beautiful, back-crowned night-flying heron in flight over the beach scene. The heron's large, powerful wings are thrust down, propelling it forward along the strong coastal breezes. The overall design is a wonderful commemoration of the rich history and current Natural Refuge status of this amazing and beautiful island!
