In this beautifully stunning bullion series, The Royal Mint has once again proven its impeccable dedication to producing British coinage that faithfully represents the nation’s rich heritage. Each new edition contributes greatly to the centuries of British heritage represented in the 10 original painted-plaster Queen’s Beasts statues of 1953. Minted in high-relief with .9999 purity and 2 oz weight, this silver bullion coin series has become a highly treasured favorite among collectors and precious metals investors world-wide.
Common to the series, each coin’s obverse displays the beautiful portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark and adopted into British coinage since 2016. Inscriptions include “ELIZABETH II – D. G. REG. F. D.” and the 5 pounds face value. Jody Clark is also the designer for each of the reverse designs of the series.
With a total of 120 oz .9999 fine silver, the releases include:
First in the ten-coin series, The Royal Mint introduces the Queen’s Beasts Lion. The reverse features a stylized and beautifully detailed image of the crowned Lion of England. The lion stands erect, with his large, crowned head thrown back in a full roar! His magnificent mane flows with his movement, as he whips his tail around behind him. All four paws are shown, with his right front claws extended forward in readiness. The lion rests his left paw upon the shield of the Lion of England. Encircling the rim are the inscriptions, “LION OF ENGLAND 2 oz FINE SILVER 999.9 2016.”
Second in the ten-coin Queen’s Beasts series is The Griffin of Edward III. Minted in high-relief with highest purity, the reverse features a finely detailed, majestic griffin, clutching a shield with its claws. The griffin spreads its wings towards the heights of the sky, with its long tail wrapped trailing behind. Encircling the rim are the inscriptions, “GRIFFIN OF EDWARD III 2 oz FINE SILVER 999.9 2017.”
Third in the ten-coin series, 2017 Queen’s Beasts Red Dragon, is minted in high-relief with highest purity. The reverse features a stylized and beautifully detailed image of the Red Dragon of Wales. Encircling the rim are the inscriptions, “RED DRAGON OF WALES 2 oz FINE SILVER 999.9 2017.” The winged dragon’s scaled, serpentine body reveals its fierce strength as its size nearly breaks out of the coin’s center field. Its face is indeed a fearsome sight! The dragon’s right claw is extended forward, ready for battle, if required. Its left claw grasps the shield. This is truly a remarkable coin!
Fourth in the ten-coin Queen’s Beasts series is The Unicorn of Scotland. The boldness and strength possessed by this ancient beast have filled the pages of heraldic stories of old for countless centuries. The symbol of power and grace have come together in this beautifully detailed image of the Unicorn of Scotland. The massive, yet sleek muscle tone of the beast is displayed in his rearing and the high kicking of his front hooves.
His mane handsomely falling in locks, as his tail, long and curved, is under him. The single horn is prominent and brings full attention to his fierce, proud face. The shield displayed harkens back to 1603, with the accession of James I. A heavy chain is around his neck, yet does not enchained him, but rather binds him in unity to the English shield.
Fifth in the ten-coin series, 2018 Queen’s Beasts is the Black Bull of Clarence. The Black Bull is universally recognized as a powerful symbol of strength and resolve. Once this animal plants his hooves, he stands his ground. That is resolve, and as displayed in this powerful design, he also has the strength to back it up. The image demonstrates the raw, muscular brawn of this beast, as the bull rears high on his back hooves. In this proud stance, he lifts his head high in a regal manner.
One hoof rests upon the shield that displays the Royal Coat of Arms of the Black Bull of Clarence. This coat of arms, and the proud lineage it represents, has a regal history that reaches back well over 200 years. Its place among the other nine Queen’s Beasts certainly establishes the strength and resolve of the Black Bull of Clarence. The design is encircled with the inscriptions, “BLACK BULL OF CLARENCE , 2 oz FINE SILVER, 999.9, 2018.”
Sixth in the ten-coin series, 2019 Queen’s Beasts is the Falcon of The Plantagenets. The Royal Mint has once again produced a remarkably striking design for this highly-anticipated release.
In stunning detail, the reverse features a large heraldic white falcon with wings spread wide, his head turned to its right. With his large, powerful talons the falcon firmly clutches a shield before him. The bird’s long tail feathers can be seen spread behind the shield. The falcon’s size fills the center inset, with his head and wing-tips extending into the narrow band encircling the rim. The shield displays a second, smaller falcon perched on an open fetterlock. This scene holds much historical significance.
Inscriptions include “FALCON OF THE PLANTAGENETS . 2 oz FINE SILVER . 999.9 . 2019.”
