This pair of Republic of Chad releases in the incredibly unique and popular Egyptian Relic Series is produced by Scottsdale Mint. These two coins both feature Ramesses II, an ancient Egyptian Pharaoh. Ramesses reigned over the vast Egyptian Empire from 1279 B.C. to his death in 1213 B.C. Most historians consider Ramesses II as one of the most powerful and effective Pharaohs ever to rule the Empire.
Unique Design and Styling
These coins offer two starkly different views of the same scene. The first design is based upon actual ancient hieroglyphs of Ramesses II. The rimless, incused-engraving, with the additional touch of the edge's appearance having a chiseled-stone look, produced an overall effect like handling a stone carving. The coins took on an even more ancient look with the hand-brushed antiquing finish.
The After Life
This second coin displays even further master craftsmanship! The obverse design began with the image of Ramesses, as it was displayed on the first coin in the. The After Life design has been significantly aged. Of course, the most obvious change was to Ramesses' head and face, which had portrayed a man in the prime of his years. In the After Life version, we see only an ancient skull. However, this is not the only modification.
The entire obverse displays the application of severe aging to the entire scene. The fine-line cracks displayed earlier, now show deep fissures. The stories depicted by the hieroglyphs had been legible, but now faded and marred beyond retrieval. Every aspect of the design has been touched quite harshly by the natural forces of decay and dissolution. There was no escape from this end.
Yet, this second coin design in the Ramesses series is entitled, After Life. Could it possibly be, that this design is actually contrasting what can be seen in the death and decay, which surrounds us, with what we cannot see of the After Life?
The Egyptian Relics series by Scottsdale Mint is produced for the Republic of Chad. As such, the reverse of each coin in the series displays a large, finely engraved image of the Republic of Chad's coat of arms. Encircling the image at the rim are the inscriptions, "Republic Du Tchad 2 Troy Oz 1000 Francs CFA .999 Fine Silver." Immediately below the coat of arms is the the release year.
