British Trade Dollar 1 oz Silver Round
This beautiful British Trade Dollar 1 oz Silver Round is presented as a stunning replica of the original Trade Dollars. During the later 19th century British merchants had begun expanding trade into the Far East. This expansion of trading interests had long been problematic due to the shortage and inconsistency of silver currency throughout the Orient. Standardizing the means of trading was also a high priority to stabilize the British colonies in the East.
The British Trade Dollar was designed and minted to be used only for trade in the Far East. The design was distinctly intended to reflect the joint business interests of Great Britain and her Eastern counterparts. With a mix of historical British coinage imagery and Oriental stylistic elements, the new dollars were readily welcomed by both sides.
Closely following the original design, the obverse of this new British Trade Dollar 1 oz Silver Round displays a beautifully-stylized ornamental flower filling the coin's center area. Inside its four primary petals are Chinese characters and Jawi script. The oriental-style border encircling the rim adds a very attractive finish to the overall design.
The reverse features the historical image of Britannia. Standing at the surf's edge, she gazes out to the open waters. She firmly grasps her trident in one hand as defender of the seas, and a British shield in the other as protector of her wide realm. Her beautifully draped full-length gown is graced by a long cape lifted lightly by the chilly sea-breeze. Her finely-crafted helmet is reminder of her constant readiness.
The background image depicts a large merchant ship underway on its journey to the distant East, actively engaged in the ongoing trade expansion. The inscriptions include "ONE TROY OUNCE" encircling the inside border at the left, and ".999 FINE SILVER" at the right. Encircling the center design at the rim is the same oriental-style decorative border as on the obverse.
Designed With a Purpose
It is difficult to imagine a more appropriate design for a currency that had the sole aim of encouraging the stability of trade relations between the East and the West. The historical importance of the British Trade Dollar during those trying times can hardly be over estimated. As well, the timeless beauty of the design deserves a fresh introduction to this century. This British Trade Dollar 1 oz Silver Round is a welcome contribution of highest quality to the legacy of the original release.
