Introduced in 1913 and struck every year until 1938, the Buffalo Nickel (or Indian Head Nickel) has been a favorite of coin collectors for generations. The uniquely American images have endeared it to millions of people. The obverse was designed by noted sculptor James Earle Fraser and features a portrait of a Native American Indian. The reverse, an American bison (or “buffalo”) is believed to be modeled after Black Diamond from the New York’s Central Park Zoo.
