American Silver Eagle Coins

American Silver Eagle coins are popular silver bullion coins produced by the US Mint since 1986. Struck in only one troy ounce, these coins carry a face value of one dollar. This is also why they are called the modern-day silver dollars. However, the purity and historical significance of these coins increases their collectible value beyond the US dollar.

Interestingly, American Silver Eagle coins are the only silver bullion assets whose purity and weight are guaranteed by the US Government. This increases the faith of investors in these coins, further pushing their demand. Three mints produce uncirculated American Silver Eagles – Philadelphia, West Point, and San Francisco. You can also purchase burnished and proof American Eagles minted especially for collectors.

With 99.9% pure silver, the American Silver Eagle coins are legal tender in the US. Designed by Adolph A. Weinman, the coin’s obverse features the “Walking Liberty” portrait. The same design was also used on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar coins from 1916 to 1947. The obverse also carries inscriptions about the mint year, “LIBERTY,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The obverse went through a slight update in 2021 with a new rendition of Weinman’s design and his mark under “IN GOD WE TRUST.”

The reverse of these coins carried the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “1 OZ FINE SILVER.” Between 1986 and 2021, John Mercanti designed the coin’s reverse. It featured the heraldic eagle holding an olive branch behind a shield. While the eagle holds the branch with its right talon, its left talon holds arrows.

The famous 2021 version of the American Silver Eagle was designed by Emily Damstra. Here, the reverse features an eagle landing on a branch, similar to the 1971 Eisenhower Dollars.

Why Invest in US Mint’s American Silver Eagle Coins?

Having gained a better understanding of these coins, it is time to explore the reasons why you should invest in US Mint American Silver Eagle coins:

Adding to Collections

People across the globe have purchased American Silver Eagle coins for collection purposes. If you are an avid coin collector and are looking for beautiful coins to add to your collection, you can purchase these coins. Collectors love the American Silver Eagles, especially their uncirculated and proof versions, due to their elegant and aesthetic designs. Collectors also create a set of these coins by buying one coin from every mintage year. If you fancy such collections, you should purchase an American Silver Eagle right away!

Fruitful Silver Investment

Silver has been considered a fruitful investment option for thousands of years. American Silver Eagles are an excellent way to invest because of their value, purity, and legal tender status. Thanks to its tangible nature, silver bullion is easy to carry and store. Moreover, looking at the trend of increasing silver spot prices should give you the confidence to earn handsome returns by investing in these silver coins.

Versatility

Many investors choose American Silver Eagles as a practical method to add actual silver to their portfolios, and they are suitable for use in IRAs as well. Buyers can take tax advantage and keep them for their retirement portfolio. Also, their 1 oz standard weight makes their buy and sell easy in small increments.

Affordable Precious Metal

Silver is a reasonably more affordable precious metal than gold and platinum. If you do not want to spend a fortune without compromising on metal purity and sleek design, you should purchase one or more American Silver Eagle coins from authorized dealers.

Navigating Economic Uncertainties

Precious metals like silver have always acted as hedges against inflation and other economic uncertainties. While paper currency and intangible assets often lead to risky investments, bullion silver investments are more secure when the country (or the world) is going through a rough economic patch.

History of American Silver Eagle Coins

The San Francisco Mint struck the first American Silver Eagle coin on October 29, 1986. James A. Baker III, the Secretary of Treasury, presided over the striking ceremony. The ceremony took place at the San Francisco Assay Office. Reportedly, before Baker pressed the electronic button to mint the first coin, he addressed the audience by saying, “I don’t need a pick and shovel to start the San Francisco Silver Rush of 1986!”

The bullion American Silver Eagles do not carry any mintmarks. While the San Francisco Mint produced them from 1986 to 1998, the Philadelphia and West Point Mints joined in from 1999 to 2000.

The San Francisco Mint also produced proof American Silver Eagles from 1986 to 1992. These coins carried the mintmark “S.” Proof coins bearing the “P” mintmark were produced at the Philadelphia Mint from 1993 to 2000. From 2001 to 2008, the West Point Mint produced proof coins with a “W” mintmark. While no proof American Silver Eagles were minted in 2009, production of these coins started again in West Point in 2010.

American Silver Eagles – Design Evolution

Over time, the design of the American Silver Eagles has gone through minor but significant upgrades. Let us walk you through the years that mark the evolution of these coins’ design:

1986 To 2021

Silver Eagles Design 1986-2021

From 1986 to 2021, the obverse of the American Silver Eagles depicted the Walking Liberty design. On the reverse, the coins showcased a heraldic eagle along with a shield, holding an olive branch with its right talon and arrows with its left.

The New Reverse Design Of 2021

silver eagles new reverse design of 2021

On October 1, 2021, a new reverse design for the American Eagle Silver coins was revealed. The coins minted in 2021 are available in two types – Type 1 and Type 2. While the Type 1 design is similar to the design on the coins minted between 1986 and 2021, the Type 2 design is a new take on the coin’s reverse for the first time in thirty-five years.

This new reverse design still features a bald eagle but in a different way. Here, the eagle is shown landing from a flight, grasping an oak branch between its claws.

Moreover, this version of the American Silver Eagles features Adolph Weinman’s initials “AW” on the obverse section for the first time since 1986.

2024 American Silver Eagles

If you are aiming for contemporary American Silver Eagles, you can go for the 2024 version of the coins. Containing .999 pure silver, these coins feature an obverse design that is much closer to the original vision of Adolph A. Weinman. They also include its artist mark “AW” and the mintmark “W” as the coins are produced at the West Point Mint. Only special versions like Proof or Burnished (uncirculated with a special finish) may carry mint marks.

Moreover, the 2024 American Silver Eagles are equipped with improved security features, such as an anti-counterfeit reeded edge variation.

At BOLD Precious Metals, you can purchase 2024 American Silver Eagles at the lowest prices online. Here are the coins you can add to your coin collection or investment portfolio:

Certified Silver Eagles

Grading a bullion coin helps you determine its circulation, condition, and purity. When it comes to grading American Silver Eagles, two third-party coin grading companies are considered most reliable – the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC).

Both these companies grade coins according to the Sheldon Grading Scale. This is a simple 70-point scale where 1 denotes the poorest condition, and 70 denotes the finest condition of a coin. American Silver Eagle coins that are uncirculated or in the best condition are graded PCGS MS70 and NGC MS70 by PCGS and NGS, respectively.

PCGS/NGC Graded American Silver Eagles

The Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) or Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) are arguably the most popular and reliable third-party grading companies for tangible assets like coins, tokens, and medals. Since their inception, they have graded over 50 million coins.

Following the Sheldon Grading Scale, NGC/PCGS grade the American Silver Eagles by giving them a numeric value from 1 to 70. The number is preceded by the coin’s “strike character.” For example, NGC MS70 denotes a coin in its Mint State. On the other hand, NGC PF70 is used for a proof coin. This also applies to PCGS.

If you are planning to purchase American Silver Eagles, prefer coins graded MS/PF 70 by any of these coin grading services.

MS69 Vs MS70 Graded American Silver Eagles

If an American Silver Eagle coin is graded MS70, it implies that the coin belongs to the highest quality possible. These coins lack any post-production imperfection visible even at 5x magnification. They also lack contact marks and bear outstanding luster.

1986-2024 Graded American Silver Eagles set - MS69

If an American Silver Eagle is graded MS69, it falls slightly short of perfection. It still carries an impeccable luster and is struck fully. However, it may contain almost unnoticeable flaws like a minor milk spot or a flashy strikethrough. To an inexperienced eye, both MS70 and MS69 American Silver Eagles will look the same.

If you want to collect various NGC-graded coins, BOLD offers a 1986 to 2024 PCGS/NGC-graded MS69 or MS70 (Type 1 and 2) American Silver Eagles Set for sale.

Premiums on American Silver Eagle Coins

You must have noticed that different silver coins carrying the same weight are sold at different prices. This is because of the premium on these coins. Premium refers to the difference between the ongoing silver spot price and the selling price of a coin. For example, if the current silver spot price is $50 and you buy a silver coin for $70, you are paying a premium of $20.

Let us have a look at the premiums you are likely to pay for popular American Silver Eagles:

Premium on Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) American Silver Eagles

The premium on BU American Silver Eagles can be as low as $3.50 and as high as $9.50, depending on demand, supply, and market sentiment.

American Silver Eagles are more expensive than other silver bullion coins, mainly due to high demand, the guarantee of the US Mint, and high quality. Check out our post on why American Silver Eagles are expensive to learn more about these coins.

Premium on Graded (MS69 and MS70) American Silver Eagles

The premium on graded American Silver Eagles can range from $30 to $41.

With BOLD, you need not worry about identifying grades as all coins are assessed by professional coin grade services. You get these coins in a secure plastic coin label that clearly indicates its grade. The label will also carry other important information, such as where the coin was struck.
