Remarkable Design!

Following the chiseled-stone look of the Egyptian Relics series, this Sphinx of Hatshepsut is possibly the finest edition yet. The combination of the rough-chiseled rimless edge, the perfectly-applied antique finsh, and the tremendous design...well, let's just say it almost qualifies to be considered an ancient Egyptian relic.

The obverse features a remarkable depiction of the Sphinx of Hatshepsut, with the colonnades of Hatshepsut's mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahri standing in the background. The shading provided by the antique-finish provides an amazing sense of depth to the overall design. The inscriptions include, "SPHINX of HATSHEPSUT" stacked in three lines at the bottom.

The reverse is common to the series, although, anything but common. Displayed is the very distinctive, finely engraved image of the Republic of Chad's coat of arms, with inscriptions "Republic DU Tchad," the release year, weight, purity, and face value.

Hatshepsut ‑ Pharaoh of Egypt

Hatshepsut ruled for 50 years as the fifth pharaoh during the Eighteenth Dynasty of Egypt; the period of ancient Egypt's greatest power. Prominent among her great achievements was the restoration of the trade routes, that would once again provide great wealth to the country under her lengthy reign. She also understood the necessity to concentrate much of her efforts to strengthen Egyptian culture that had suffered greatly under foreign rulers. She brought together the most accomplished architects and builders to design and construct great monuments, shrines, temples, and obelisks that would again establish Egyptian culture that had fallen into such ruin.

Sphinx of Hatshepsut

The massive granite Sphinx of Hatshepsut is actually one of no less than six great, sculpted-granite sphinxes that stood at Hatshepsut's mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahri. Upon her death, Thutmose III, Hatshepsut's successor (her nephew), ordered all six to be completely destroyed and removed to a quarry in his attempt to remove her name from history. Thankfully, the pieces of the sphinx were identified, collected and restored by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The colossal sculpture weighs seven tons.

The sphinx was sculpted to depict the feminine facial characteristics of Hatshepsut as the head of the massive lion. Upon its head is a nemes headcloth the traditional head covering associated with the pharaoh. Also included is the royal postiche (fake beard), symbol of the power the pharaoh wields.

We cannot more highly recommend this 2019 5 oz Silver Sphinx of Hatshepsut for its impeccable production and beauty! It is a remarkable work of art that you will most definitely want to display and encourage others to consider.
