This highly anticipated inaugural release of the brand new Republic of Chad Egyptian Relics Silver bullion coin series is certainly making its mark. This Coin's design is one of the most unique and pleasing releases to hit the market in some time. That really shouldn't be a surprise, though, as Scottsdale Mint has made history with each new series they produce.
It seems quite appropriate that the series would feature King Tut (Tutankhamun) on this first coin. There has hardly been a more universally recognizable figure of ancient Egyptian history than this Pharaoh King. With the discovery in 1922 of his tomb, which among other historically priceless artifacts, contained his mummy encased in a gold sarcophagus.
This new 5 oz Egyptian Relics coin is masterfully designed and incuse engraved* to present the look and feel of chiseled-stone. As though carved from a stone wall, the hand-brushed antique finish brings a sense of ancient Egypt's hieroglyphs to the coin. Coupled with the thickness of 11.8mm, the stone-like appearance is striking.
The obverse features King Tut in a distinctive manner true to ancient hieroglyphs. Its incuse engraving style, coupled with the rough, hand-brushed antique finish brings a sense of ancient authenticity to the coin.
The reverse displays a large, finely engraved image of the Republic of Chad's coat of arms. Encircling the image at the rim are the inscriptions, "Republic Du Tchad 5 Troy Oz 3000 Francs CFA .999 Fine Silver." Immediately below the coat of arms is the the release year.
*Incuse design is when an image, which might normally be engraved to be raised above the coin's surface, is rather struck to be recessed into the surface.
