2021 1oz Silver Rwanda African Ounce Okapi BU

The Rwanda African Ounce wildlife series was introduced in 2008 and features a different animal from the African continent for each annual release. The series is well established and highly popular on a global scale. This new 2021 1oz Silver Rwanda African Ounce Okapi BU is an excellent addition to the on-going Rwanda Wildlife series.

Okapi - Zebra Giraffe

This curious-looking African Okapi is directly related to the well-known African giraffe. The Okapi are considerably smaller than the giraffe; more the size and body shape of a deer. It does have a long neck, although not anywhere near as long as the giraffe. The Okapi is best known for it curious zebra-like horizontal stripes on its rear flanks, extending down its legs and ending in solid white. The stripes are also on the front pair of legs.

Its body coat is primarily a chocolate brown with a reddish tint. Its chest is a light grey-white, as is its face, extending down the throat. The Okapi males also sport short horns, covered with fur. Its preferred habitat is under the canopy provided by the forests. This accounts for the animal's other common name, "Forest Giraffe." The Okapi is also listed as an endangered species, and is a fine featured animal for the Rwanda wildlife series. Remarkable Series Design

As Rwandan legal tender, the obverse displays a large image of the Coat of Arms of the Republic of Rwanda centered, with inscriptions encircling the rim, including "BANKI NKURU Y'U RWANDA AMAFARANGA MIRONGO ITANU." The face value of 50 Francs is also included.

Following the series layout, the reverse displays a large, topographical map of the African continent. The map fills half of the field, and even spills into the narrow rimband. The lower area features a very tender scene of a mother Okapi with her single young offspring, feeding under the forest canopy. Inscriptions encircling the rim include, "AFRICAN OUNCE . 2021 . 1oz FINE SILVER 999."
