Perth continues their annual unveiling of a new Kookaburra design, and for 2019, the scene it displays is wonderfully fresh!

Lovely and Graceful

The obverse introduces for the first time, the 6th generation effigy of Queen Elizabeth II to be displayed on Australian coins. The new portrait is based on that designed by Jody Clark of the Royal Mint for 2016. It is distinctively different, however, in that it displays the Queen's shoulders and full neckline. This is a very lovely and graceful pose. This new effigy is certain to be well received. The band at the rim includes the inscriptions, "ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA" at the top, and "30 DOLLARS" at the bottom.

Sunset at Water's Edge

The reverse design displays a very pleasing water scene at sunset. The large kookaburra is featured perched on a branch of a submerged tree, just above the water's calm surface. Perching is a favorite pastime of the laughing kookaburra as it waits for its next meal to scurry by. The fine detail of the bird is even more noticeable as its size fills nearly a third of the coin's center field. In fact, its tail feathers extend beyond the rim!

On the horizon the large sun slowly disappears into the water. Slight ripples on the water's surface provide a nice sense of movement. A small tree is seen off to the right, growing among tall dense grasses. Overall this an exceptionally pleasing design, worthy of the fine legacy of the Australian Silver Kookaburra bullion series. The narrow band at the rim frames the design very well with the inscriptions "AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA" at the top, and "2019 1 KILO 9999 SILVER" at the bottom. The Perth mintmark is at the left.

History

First released in 1990, the Kookaburra series has been an overwhelming success in popularity. The series was the first from Perth Mint to feature a new reverse design each year. This is also Perth's longest running series. The Kookaburra maintains a growing a worldwide following, and popularity increases with each release. The upgrade to .9999 silver purity beginning with the 2018 release resulted in an even greater boost to both popularity and sales.
