2018 Silver 2 oz Australia Next Generation Perth Koala

This is truly a unique opportunity to get in on the very beginning of a brand-new coin series from Perth Mint. Perth has reached all the way back to the Middle Ages of France and Great Britain for fresh inspiration in the series design. The Next Generation series is minted in the ancient "heavy-foot" style, known as piedfort. Those were the days when smaller diameter double-weights were popular. It is clear from the launch of this outstanding new series that piedfort will soon become popular once again. And this inaugural 2018 Silver 2 oz Australia New Generation Perth Koala is a stunning beginning!

As unique as this double-weight coin's style is, the real focus should shine on the theme of the series. The Next Generation is a wonderful celebration of life in the wild extending across generations. Each coin design in the series will display a poignant scene of a mother and child representation of Australian Outback wildlife. The inaugural release features the Koala, designed by the wonderfully gifted artist, Aleysha Howarth, who has worked with Perth on several earlier projects.

The reverse displays a full-body, left-facing profile of the mother koala climbing along a leafy Eucalyptus branch. Her face is turned, facing us, as though posing for the photo. You can hardly blame her for posing, as she is represented in such beautiful detail. Her fur is so finely engraved, it looks like you could reach out and stroke it. Her expression, framed by her large ears, is so adorable there is no resisting your urge to smile!

And then, there is the small joey clinging tightly to her back. She is old enough to have migrated from her mother's pouch, where she hid in safety the first six months after birth. Once you move your focus to her, your smile becomes a warm sense of the wonder of life, and the beauty of maternity. The hope that is bound-up in the Next Generation is represented with both astounding detail and tenderness in this delightful scene.

The background is completed by the very fine, precision-engraved radial lines emanating from the coin's center to the rim. These also serve as an anti-counterfeiting security feature. Additional eucalyptus leaves are shown hanging down from the top rim, rustling in the light breeze of the Australian Outback. The traditional "P" Perth Mint mark is at the far right at the center of the rim.

The obverse displays the beautiful portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, created by Ian Rank-Broadley. As with the reverse, filling the background are fine precision-engraved radial lines emanating from the coin's center to the rim. Inscriptions include "ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA" encircling the top rim, with "2 oz 9999 Ag 2018 2 DOLLARS." at the bottom.

There is not likely to be a more popular new series release this year than Perth Mint's The Next Generation 2 oz, double-thick piedfort style coins.
