Gold Mexico 50 Peso

The Mexican Gold 50 Pesos, better known as the "Centenario," has been in production since 1921. Its premier release marked the 100th anniversary of Mexico's independence from Spain, following a difficult and costly 11-year war. The coin's obverse design features the beautiful Angel of Independence. Also referred to as the "Winged Victory," the depiction is drawn from the Monumento a la Independencia, one of the most famous monuments in Mexico.

As a world bullion coin, minted and guaranteed by the Mexican government, the Gold 50 Pesos remains a standard for bullion investors worldwide.

The inscription, "Estados Unidos Mexicanos" (United Mexican States) encircles the eagle's image.

History

The Monumento a la Independencia was built in 1910 to commemorate the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence a hundred years earlier. Its style is that of a Corinthian-period Victory Column. Under the main base of the column a mausoleum enshrines the entombed remains of 14 heroes of the War. Rising 118 feet above the main base is the Victory Column, constructed of steel, overlaid with stone. The column's interior houses a staircase, which leads up 200 steps to an observation balcony, looking down upon the Paseo de la Reforma.

The Column's true, crowning beauty is displayed in the 22-foot statue of the Winged Victory. Cast of bronze, and overlaid with 24k Gold, the statue is based upon the Greek goddess, Nike, associated with victory and honor. This Victory Column was inspired by the heroic actions of patriots who struggled towards victory, honor, and national independence.

Eleven years after the Monument's dedication, the 1921 release of the Cententario, further honored the hard fought victory of Independence. The design was inspired directly from the Winged Victory statue. Standing upon the column, She spreads her wings, and with her right hand raised high, she tightly clutches the laurel crown. Her left hand holds out a broken chain, symbolizing independence and freedom from oppression.
