The Allegories of Germania Mint introduce a very intriguing collection of the legendary female personifications of prominent historical lands and nations. In each example, Lady Germania meets with her counterpart representing another nation in "symbolic circumstances." On the inaugural release, the brave and beautiful Lady Germania was shown meeting with the guardian of Great Britain, Lady Britannia. That introduction of the Allegories series was received with high praise for both design and production excellence. The second Allegories release featured Lady Columbia, representing the United States. The third release continues the intriguing series theme with this 2021 Germania Allegories Italia 25 Mark 5 oz Silver BU, introducing Italia, feminine guardian of Italy. Strength and Friendship

The obverse portrays a wonderfully stunning representation of two powerful guardians. Austria and Germania meet together in the friendship between cultures. As noted by the mint,

"The obverse of the coin presents the personifications of Austria and Germania, depicted as young and beautiful women. In the past, Lady Austria was regarded as the epitome of the multi-ethnic country… In the artistic vision of Germania Mint, she is holding a spear, which symbolizes the axis of the world, power, dignity and honour. Austria’s head is decorated with a laurel wreath, a symbol with multiple positive meanings, whilst Germania is crowned with a branch of an oak – the tree that has accompanied her from the very beginning of the series. In turn, our heroine holds her inherent attribute – the imperial sword "Reichsschwert". Closeness between the two germanic amazons represents friendship between both cultures."

The background is filled with a distinctive guilloche pattern that really makes Austria and Germania prominently stand out. Inscriptions "ALLEGORIES . 5 OZ . 999.9 FINE SILVER" are displayed within a narrow band encircling the rim. An attractive texture fills the band.

Interpretive Germania Coat of Arms

Germania, as such, never became a country with its own coat of arms. The design is both highly representative of these values, and absolutely gorgeous!

Quoting from the Mint's own descriptive text,

"According to the previous series, the image on the reverse is the coat of arms representing moral principles and noble values. Germania was a historical land and has never been an official country, that’s why we’ve decided to create our own interpretation of its coat of arms. Its symbols and design are a creation of our imagination, however it has been created in accordance with applicable heraldry rules.

The crowned shield has been divided into four parts, from which each has a traditional meaning, precisely defined by heraldry. The shield itself is a symbol of truth, loyalty and trust. The crown equals authority and nobility as well as chivalry.

• Germania Mint’s visualisation of the Bicephalous eagle – a Roman mythology symbol associated with Janus, god of all origins, guardian of doors, gates, passages and bridges, patron of contracts and alliances. Heads facing opposite sides symbolize the past and the future.
• The check pattern refers to wisdom and prudence – characteristics of every noble sovereign.
• The gold ribbon with three flowers. Flowers represent determining values of a strong and independent nation – unity, integrity and freedom.
• The wild boar symbol of mightiness was a very popular and respectful animal in Roman Empire. Legio I Italica, Legio X Fretensis and Legio XX Valeria Victrix are three of the most famous Roman legions with boar in their emblem."

Allegories Series

Allegories raise the question as to why many ancient lands and nations, (particularly in the West), have both feminine names and female personifications as their legendary guardians. Perhaps, this could be explained in the allegorical sense of identifying the "homeland" with the actual home and family in which they were raised under maternal care and protection.

As the mint stated it, "Treating the country as a metaphor of home and family, nations have always identified their countries with maternal protection, which provided them with a sense of security and community. Wishing to pay a tribute to them, we created a series of coins called 'The Allegories', with which we want to celebrate the extraordinary figures of 'mothers of nations', that for centuries have encouraged people in the hardest moments of human history."
