Scottsdale Mint, in partnership with Gibraltar, is pleased to announce the release of a stunning new bullion series, an anticipated annual program. The Royal Arms of England is making its inaugural release featuring the heraldic shield of Plantagenet King Richard I. More popularly known as King Richard the Lionheart, he is accredited to have displayed the first Royal Arms of England. This 2018 1 oz Gold Gibraltar Royal Arms of England (Lion) is a magnificent introduction to the new series!
During the late 12th Century, King Richard I of England rose to become a powerful and dominant figure in world history. The heraldic stories that have followed his exploits as Richard the Lionheart have become an enduring legacy that to this day continues to inspire fresh retelling. Richard established himself very early as a fearless leader, able to forge strong alliances and command strategic military campaigns.
As the Plantagenet King Richard I, his heraldry was displayed in the shield bearing three lions passant-guardant (lion walking with only the right front paw raised). For the next 200 years, each successive Plantagenet King continued to display the same shield of three lions. This shield of heraldry later was adopted as what is now the Royal Arms of England. King Edward III added a fleur-de-lis to the original design in 1369.
Scottsdale has once again produced a stunning series design that is worthy of the theme. The presentation has a touch of classical elegance, while providing a fresh creative flair. The obverse will be common to the series, however it is anything but common! The distinctive Raphael Maklouf effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is featured. A very narrow beaded band tightly encircles the rim. The primary inscriptions are displayed in a large, clean serif-type that completely encircles the band. Included are "ELIZABETH II . DEI . GRA . REGINA . GIBRALTAR . 5 POUNDS." Also, arched to the left of the Queen is inscribed "1 TROY OUNCE" and to the right is "999 FINE Gold."
The reverse of this 2018 1 oz Gold Gibraltar Royal Arms of England (Lion) centrally features the heraldic escutcheon (shield) of King Richard I of England, which bears the Plantagenet Royal Arms of the three Lions passant-guardant. Filling the background field is the fleur-de-lis vine that was added to the Royal Arms by King Edward III.
Very interestingly is the finishing touch incorporated into the design. The Tudor Rose images among the fleur-de-lis vine is representative of the ending of the Plantagenet Dynasty. This, of course, was accomplished by King Henry VII deposing Richard III in the War of the Roses. As with the obverse, also displayed is the attractive narrow beaded band at the rim. The single inscription is the release date of 2018.
Scottsdale is often envied by its peers for some of the most stunning and unique series designs in the private sector. The impeccable skill of its creative staff is clearly displayed with each new coin released. Though other mints may envy, Scottsdale customers anxiously await each release of their favorite series! Their anticipation is never disappointed.
