The series features stunning bullion offerings from the eight Eastern Caribbean Island nation members. Included are Antigua & Barbuda, Anguilla, Commonwealth of Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, Saint Kitts & Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent & The Grenadines. The fifth new edition to release is this remarkable 2020 1oz Gold Montserrat Oriole Colored Proof edition.
Each of the 2018 and 2019 8-coin editions quickly became best-sellers and maintained strong series popularity throughout the full release cycle. This new 2020 Montserrat edition of the ECCB EC8 series celebrates the beauty of the island's national bird, the Montserrat Oriole. The celebration also recognizes that this particular oriole species have been identified to be a vulnerable species. As the national bird, there are certain protections that aid in efforts to support the species.
The highly attractive obverse is common to the series. The inset features the Raphael Maklouf effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Distinctive laurels of evergreen shrubs frame the portrait on either side, nearly filling the center inset. A narrow band encircles the rim, which includes the inscriptions, "EASTERN CARIBBEAN CENTRAL BANK. 1 oz .9999 GOLD . QUEEN ELIZABETH II . TEN DOLLARS."
The reverse features a stunning scene that focuses on a single Montserrat Oriole, perched on a branch. The incredible detail almost brings the bird to life, especially with the striking colorization. This species of orioles have a black back, from the head to the tail feathers. From its breast down to the underside of the tail feathers is a deep, striking yellow-orange color. The Montserrat Oriole is truly a beautiful bird, particularly in flight.
The background depicts the volcano, Soufriére Hills, (French for "Sulfur Outlet"). Acrid smoke and ash are shown rising high above the peak. An active lava flow at the peak is colorized in brilliant yellow-orange. Also displayed is the extremely rugged terrain that surrounds the volcano. Though previously, the Soufriére Hills volcano long lay dormant, in 1995 it again became active. This resulted in the southern portion of the island of Montserrat being designated as an uninhabitable exclusion zone. Inscriptions include "MONTSERRAT" at the top rim and "MONTSERRAT ORIOLE" at the bottom. The 2020 issue date is displayed above the bird.
