This Republic of Chad release in the incredibly unique and popular Egyptian Relic Series, is produced by Scottsdale Mint. This coin displays Anubis, the god of death, mummification, embalming, the afterlife, cemeteries, tombs, and the Underworld in ancient Egyptian religion. He is usually depicted as a canine or a man with a canine head.
Like many ancient Egyptian deities, Anubis assumed different roles in various contexts. Depicted as a protector of graves as early as the First Dynasty (c. 3100 – c. 2890 BC), Anubis was also an embalmer. By the Middle Kingdom (c. 2055–1650 BC) he was replaced by Osiris in his role as lord of the underworld. One of his prominent roles was as a god who ushered souls into the afterlife. He attended the weighing scale during the "Weighing of the Heart", in which it was determined whether a soul would be allowed to enter the realm of the dead. Anubis is one of the most frequently depicted and mentioned gods in the Egyptian pantheon, however, no relevant myth involved him.
The coin's design is based on actual ancient hieroglyphs, incuse engraved,* with added hand-brushed antique finish. With the additional touch of the edge's appearance having a chiseled-stone look, the resulting overall effect is like handling a stone carving.
The obverse design features Anubis in the foreground with hieroglyphs in the background. The entire obverse displays remarkable master craftsmanship in the application of aging to the entire scene.
The reverse of each coin in the series displays a large, finely engraved image of the Republic of Chad's coat of arms. Encircling the image at the rim are the inscriptions, "Republic Du Tchad 2 Troy Oz 1000 Francs CFA .999 Fine Silver 2021." Immediately below the coat of arms is the release year.
*Incuse design is when an image, which might normally be engraved to be raised above the coin's surface, is rather struck to be recessed into the surface.
