The obverse design is based on the Saint-Gaudens' Double Eagle, introduced into circulation in 1907. Saint-Gaudens' iconic design was adapted to feature on the original Gold American Eagles.

History

Congress, under the 1985 American Eagle Bullion Program, authorized the production and manner of distribution of the coins. President Ronald Reagan was quick to sign it into law. The intent of the program was to provide a convenient and cost-effective means for investors to purchase precious metals. The U.S. Government guarantees the weight, content, and purity of Gold Eagles. These were the first legal tender gold bullion coins to be produced in the U.S. since 1933.
