The obverse depicts a clock dial with ornamental clock hands showing the time to be 5 minutes to 12:00. The $5 face value is located at 5 o'clock. Inscriptions are "NOW AND FOREVER" at the 9 o'clock mark and AG (Latin abbreviation for Argentum) at 12:00.

The reverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the middle left. An intersecting wave pattern goes from left to right, with each wave comprised of seven separate lines. At the intersection is a stylized circle with the inscriptions "NEW ZEALAND DOLLARS" and "5."
