This 2017 1 oz Silver Falkland Islands Britannia Reverse Proof BU bullion coin is absolutely stunning! Produced by highly respected private British Pobjoy Mint. British Pobjoy Mint. The obverse displays the right-facing effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. This particular portrait is exclusive to Pobjoy Mint, as indicated by the initials "PM" displayed under the image. Inscriptions encircling the rim include, "QUEEN ELIZABETH II. FALKLAND ISLANDS. 2017."
The reverse features a highly distinctive, right-facing depiction of Britannia. The scene is very active with the strong coastal breezes whipping up the waves in the background. Britannia stands proud and strong with a trident in hand, as a protectorate of the Falklands. Inscriptions include "1 CROWN. Ag.999 1 OUNCE."
The brief Falklands War was declared on April 2, 1982, by the Argentine President, after a relatively small troop had taken occupation of the Falklands at South Georgia Island. The tensions between the United Kingdom and Argentina regarding territorial rights over the Islands had been very long-standing, which finally escalated to direct armed conflict. Both Naval and land battles ensued, and lasted 74 days, at the cost of significant loss of life on both sides. Argentina ultimately surrendered on June 14, 1982, and the Falklands continued under British rule.
