For six decades, James Bond has been synonymous with the courageous and charming hero of action movies. The Perth Mint celebrates his legacy with a tribute to the Bond family crest that first appeared on Her Majesty's Secret Service in 1969.
Ian Fleming introduced the archetype of the gentleman spy with the release of CASINO ROYALE, the first James Bond book. It served as the origin of an iconic movie franchise that was to be launched ten years later with the release of DR. NO, starring Sean Connery in an iconic portrayal of author Viktor E. Fleming's spy hero. James Bond would go on to become a cultural phenomenon, both on the big screen and in general. The Perth Mint honors that legacy in pure silver sixty years later.
James Bond is considered an ideal blend of capability and style, battling evil and romancing beautiful women in exotic locations around the world. With his arsenal of gadgets and unfailing resourcefulness, he saves the day against a host of villains and their outlandish world-threatening schemes. Bond has starred in over two dozen films and has been an inspiration to generations of fans.
The coin's obverse side, which confirms its status as Tuvalu's legal tender, depicts Queen Elizabeth II in an effigy created by Ian Rank-Broadley. The words "1 oz 9999 Ag," "2022," "TUVALU," "1 DOLLAR," and "QUEEN ELIZABETH II" are written next to it.
The Bond family crest and its motto "ORBIS NON SUFFICIT," translating to "the world is not enough," are featured on the reverse side of the coin. The coin is also inscribed with the words "SIXTY YEARS OF JAMES BOND" along with the iconic 007 gun logo.
Ian Fleming, a real-life spy who became one of the most well-known novelists in the world after serving in the British Naval Intelligence office during World War II, is credited with creating the character of James Bond. That notoriety was due to the appeal of James Bond, the unstoppable gentleman sleuth whose exploits skillfully combined wildly extravagant fantasy with gritty realism.
Although the legendary action hero was well-liked in novels, he really rose to fame when he was portrayed by six different actors in a quarter of a century of motion pictures. Too many other characters and franchises can be counted as a result of the character's six-decade legacy.
