2022 Memorial Sovereigns are the first of these gold coins to feature a portrait of King Charles.

Not even a few weeks after the King's accession to the throne was, the new coinage portrait unveiled. It is the creation of British sculptor Martin Jennings, who first modeled Charles's profile in plaster after looking through pictures of the man. Charles is depicted in Jennings' effigy-looking left, in contrast to his mother, who is looking right at her coins. Since the seventeenth century, it has been customary for British monarchs to face a different direction than their forebears.

Jennings' portrait of King Charles lacks any glitzy headgear or other indications of his royal status, in contrast to Queen Elizabeth II, who was depicted wearing a crown in four of her five definitive coinage portraits. The new coin portrait resembles other male members of the House of Windsor in this way. On their coin, George V and George VI were both depicted without a crown.
