The obverse side of the Gold $20 Liberty Double Eagle NGC/PCGS Graded Coin displays the left-profile effigy of Lady Liberty, inspired by the original design by James B. Longacre and minted from 1850-1907. Liberty wears a crown that reads “LIBERTY” on its hairband. This effigy of Liberty is encircled by 13 stars, paying homage to the 13 colonies of American history.
The reverse side of the coin depicts the great seal of the United States of America, inspired by the coat of arms designed by Charles Thomas and William Barton. This design depicts a heraldic eagle with a shield in front of its breast, holding an olive branch in one of its paws and a bundle of arrows in the other. The intricate detail on the direction of the eagle’s head facing toward the side of the olive branch emphasizes that peace is preferable to war. The motto of the U.S., “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” stands for “Out of many, One,” and the phrase “IN GOD WE TRUST” is displayed. The phrase is surrounded by 13 stars, reverting to the 13 colonies that started the United States of America. The reverse is engraved with: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS.”
