This story by the Aztec people represents two star-crossed lovers united by God. Iztaccíhuatl was a royal princess, and Popocatepetl was a designated warrior in her father’s army. In one of the battles, Popocatepetl was falsely declared dead, which led to the death of Iztaccíhuatl in shock. Upon returning from battle, he finds her deceased and carries her to the hill, vowing to stay by her side forever. God decides to cover them in snow and turn them into mountains due to their love and devotion. This story has been passed down through generations, creating the landscape of Mexico.
