The $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin was minted from 1850 to 1907 and designed by James Earle Fraser, the Chief Engraver of the US Mint. The discovery of the gold reserve in California led to the government consider minting other denominations of the original Eagle gold coinage. The Double Eagle gold coin was then introduced in 1850 at the Philadelphia Mint.
