The $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coin (or the $5 Half Eagle Gold) is the only coin with an incuse format from the US Mint. The $5 gold coin bears random dates from 1908 to 1916 and 1929. These coins are graded Very Fine, which signifies that they have proper fine details, but few wear and tear and hairlines are visible on the higher points.
The obverse side of the coin bears an effigy of the Native American Indian head designed by Bela Lyon Pratt. The native American is depicted wearing the Chieftain's full headdress as he gazes to the left. The inscriptions surrounding the effigy depict the year, which will vary as per availability; above the effigy is the word “LIBERTY”, surrounded by 13 stars, which represent the 13 colonies of the United States of America.
The reverse of the $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coin bears the image of the majestic American bald eagle in the center perched on a bundle of arrows tied together and coiled by an olive branch. On either side of the eagle are the mottos of the US, “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM”. The reverse also depicts the inscriptions for the country of issue and face value as “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. FIVE DOLLARS.”
The $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coin has been passed through a considerable number of obstacles and hurdles before and after circulation. This story began in 1904 with President Theodore Roosevelt, when he actively pursued the idea of including new coin designs for the US coins. The talented sculptor Augustus Saint Gaudens, was authorized to design five coins. Halfway through, the Double Eagle and Eagle coins were into circulation, leading to the Mint changing its focus to fractional coins!
Unfortunately, Saint Gaudens passed away in 1907, and a new designer was appointed to complete the series. The American sculptor from Connecticut, Bela Lyon Pratt, was appointed to design two identical coins with recessed designs! Thus, the Half Eagle and Quarter Eagle came into existence!
