The Day Eagle Landed

The day was July 20, 1969. It was as though the world stood still, waiting to hear that startling news sent by Mission Commander, Neil Armstrong, from inside the lunar lander module, Eagle, "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed." As Commander Neil Armstrong climbed down to the surface, he became the first human to walk on the moon. Upon that first step he spoke one of the most memorable messages ever recorded, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

50th Anniversary

It is fitting that we memorialize these high-water marks in our leaps forward. We now have reached the half-century mark of the amazingly difficult achievement of Commander, Neil Armstrong, Command Module Pilot, Michael Collins, and Lunar Module Pilot, Buzz Aldrine's successful "Manned Lunar Mission." The reverse design displays an incredibly remarkable scene! A highly detailed American bald eagle, descending quickly to the moon's rough surface with its wings fully spread and talons extended. Grasped firmly within its talons is the olive branch of peace. High upon the horizon hangs the earth, partially eclipsed by the moon's shadow. Accenting the design is a narrow, fine double line rim band. Above the eagle is the inscription "APOLLO 11" in large, bold type.
