The Royal Canadian Mint is excited to introduce the inaugural release of their new, exciting Ice Age of Canada series. We join them in their excitement after seeing this first offering, the 2023 Silver 2 oz Canada Ice Age Sabre-Tooth Cat BU. The series is poised to release more coins, primarily focused on exploring the beasts that once roamed this wild land. The first evidence that Smilodon fatalis, or 'Smilodon' for short, lived in Canada was from a 35,000/40,000-year-old bone found in the plains of Alberta, Canada, in 2019. Smilodon, which means "scalpel tooth," was found in North, Central, and South America, and it hunted large herbivores.
This first release of The Kraken fully demonstrates the mint's commitment to supplying the series with great action scenes and top-quality production.
As a legal tender offering by the Royal Canadian Mint, the obverse of this 2023 Silver 2 oz Canada Ice Age Sabre-Tooth Cat BU coin displays the right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, created by Susan Blunt. It features four pearls, symbolizing the four effigies that have been minted onto Canadian coins, dividing the years commemorating the beginning and end of her reign. Inscriptions are "ELIZABETH II . 2023 . D . G. REGINA . 10 DOLLARS. 1952....2022."
The reverse features the fearsome and savage Ice Age cat, the Sabre-tooth tiger, aka, Smilodon. The cat appears to be leaping from the coin, ready to sink its scalpel-like teeth into whichever unfortunate animal is in its way. The facial expression lets the viewer know this beast is no house cat! The background features trees on the right side and mountain peaks on the left and bottom. Inscriptions are "CANADA 2023 . FINE SILVER . 2 OZ . ARGENT PUR . 9999."
This coin features the micro-engraved laser maple leaf privy security feature set within the main design area and precise radial lines around the border that extend from the center.
This is a very fine introduction to this exciting new silver bullion series, Ice Age of Canada. We are looking forward to seeing how the series continues to develop over the coming releases.
