What Happened with the SS Tilawa?

The SS Tilawa, built in 1942 amid World War II and British rule, was a steamer with a carrying capacity of 4,039 passengers. It carried 2,391 silver bars aboard 281 passengers and crew. The SS Tilawa met its tragic end when it collided with two torpedoes launched by the Japanese, burying it into the Indian Ocean.

Massive rescue operations finally did ensue, but their success was drowned out because the wreck had already occurred. Hence, such disasters often constitute an acceptance of the risks inherent in carrying civilian cargo cargo vessels at the time.
