The obverse design is based on the Saint-Gaudens' Double Eagle, introduced into circulation in 1907. The Double Eagle was produced from 1907-1933, and to this day is considered the most beautiful design ever produced by the U.S. Saint-Gaudens' iconic design was adapted to feature on the new Gold American Eagles.
Lady Liberty stands gracefully, yet proud and strong under the banner of Liberty. With the first rays of the sun rising behind her, she looks out at the dawn of a bright future. Elegantly draped with a flowing, full-length gown, Liberty displays a strong, resolute confidence. The glory of her long hair is tossed beautifully in waves behind her, captured in the breeze.
In her right hand she raises a lighted torch high before her. The torch not only lights the path forward, but also bears witness to the liberty and freedom for which she stands. In the same manner, our Lady grasps the olive branch of peace in her left hand. She holds it out prominently before the Nations of the world, to make clear just how highly she prizes that peace.
The reverse of the coin features a magnificent male bald eagle descending towards his nesting mate. She is covering her young hatchlings with her strong, beautiful wings. The regal strength of the male is displayed in his large, powerful wings. In his talons he grasps an olive branch.
Miley Busiek, a prominent sculptress, produced the reverse design. She was commissioned to design the Inaugural medallion for President Ronald Reagan. Busiek made a daring decision to depart from the traditional depiction of a single, heraldic eagle. Her design featured a family of eagles, in a nesting scene. This displayed the eagle's magnificence and strength, as well as the tenderness and protective care of a family nesting. She entitled it "Family of Eagles." Both the President and the public loved it! Busiek went on to submit the same design for the Gold Eagle. After much lobbying, Congress was convinced the design would be well received, and so recommended it for the new coin.
Congress, under the 1985 American Eagle Bullion Program, authorized the production and manner of distribution of the coins. President Ronald Reagan was quick to sign it into law. The intent of the Program was to provide a convenient and cost effective means for investors to purchase precious metals. The U.S. Government guarantees the weight, content, and purity of Gold Eagles. These were the first legal tender gold bullion coins to be produced in the U.S. since 1933.
Since the launch of the series, different versions of Gold Eagle coins have been offered for investors and collectors. The Bullion coins carry a standard finish and are considered to be precious metals investment coins. These are not sold directly to the public, but are distributed through a network of authorized purchasers. This network provides efficient distribution as well as a two-way market for the bullion coins.
Proof Gold Eagles have been offered for collectors since 1986. These coins are manufactured through a specialized minting process, which includes multiple strikes with specially prepared dies to create a high quality finish. Proof coins generally display a cameo finish, where raised elements of the design are frosted and the background fields are mirrored. In 2006 the U.S. Mint issued a special Reverse Proof Gold Eagle, which features the opposite effect.
In more recent years, the U.S. Mint has offered a second numismatic version for collectors. These Burnished collectible uncirculated coins are struck on specially burnished blanks, resulting in a finish similar to the bullion version. The burnished coins contain the "W" mint mark on the obverse for clear differentiation. This style was offered from 2006 to 2008, canceled for two years, and then resumed from 2011 to present.
American Gold Eagle Coins are offered in four different sizes. The most popular size contains one troy ounce of gold content, with the remaining three options containing a standard fractional weight. Each size has a different legal tender face value.
All four denominations have been offered as bullion versions since the series was launched in 1986. Proof coins were initially only available in the 1 oz size. In the second year of issue the 1/2 oz size was added. In the third year, the remaining 1/4 and 1/10 oz sizes were offered as proofs. The collectible uncirculated versions of the coins were initially offered in all denominations from 2006 to 2008. From 2011 to present, however, only the 1 oz size has been issued.
Gold Eagles are struck with a durable composition of 22 karat gold. Originally developed in 1526 in England, this composition became known as "Crown Gold." Coins minted in 22 karat gold are much more durable, and show less wear over the years. It is comprised of 91.67% gold, 3% silver, and 5.33% copper. Gold Eagles are produced so that each size contains its stated Troy weight in pure gold.
