Austrian Mint Coins

The Austrian Mint is one of the most prominent players in the Minting Industry, having more than 825 years of experience. In 1988, the Austrian Mint started operating as a private company. BOLD Precious Metals, in association with the Austrian Mint, brings you the best of Austria Mint Coins.

Austrian Mint coins each come with a history both in terms of their story and their quality. Austrian Mint-produced bullion coins, such as the Austrian Philharmonic, are among the world's best sellers. Currently, Euros are being minted by the Austrian Mint too.

The Austrian Mint is located in Vienna, the capital of Austria. Its classical facade gives way to its state-of-the-art production plant. With the combination of craftsmanship, tradition, and the world's leading coin-making technology, the Austrian Mint and its 200 employees are able to produce world-class coins of about 350 million a year!

Austrian Mint History

In 1194, the Austrian Mint was deeply rooted in the English and Austrian royal feud. Duke Leopold V was paid 12 tonnes of Austrian silver by Richard the Lionheart to escape the year of imprisonment he faced for insulting Austrian blue blood. With the 12 tonnes of Austrian silver, Duke Leopold V decided to strike Austrian Mint silver coins, which led to the foundation and establishment of the Austrian Mint.

The Austrian Mint has used many different minting techniques of coin minting throughout its long history. A minting hammer was used to mint Austrian Mint coins until the 16th century, which was then followed by a roller press, screw press, and roller press mining techniques. In 1830, the Mint started using the closed collar technique to create a consistent round shape. This minting method is still used today, albeit with some modern modifications. Changes have been afoot in the Austrian Mint’s engraving department. Following the retirement of Thomas Pesendorfer in 2016, Helmut Andexlinger became the head of the design team, assisted by the highly experienced Herbert Wähner and two new team members, Anna Rastl and Kathrin Kuntner.

The first coin was minted in Austria around the year 1000 in Salzburg. (Mining didn't take place in the east and southeast of Austria until the 12th century.) One of the cabinets in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna named Johannes Hartner, of the Kunsthistorisches Museum  in Vienna, explains the connection between political events and mintage in Austria:

“Margrave Heinrich Jasomirgott (1141-1177) in 1155 established Vienna as the new capital of the Babenberg March. Within a year, the region was separated from the Duchy of Bavaria and made its stakes high to the independent Duchy of Austria, which had resulted in Vienna's ascent as a new ducal residence. Krems was the location where the mint was located formerly, which was the former seat of the Babenbergs, where the coin was minted since 1110/20. In 1192, when Styria fell to the Babenbergs, new trade routes to the south were opened by Viennese merchants and a new center for the robust trade in goods on the Danube. In view of these new economic prospects, the founding of a ducal Mint in Vienna seemed to be only a matter of time. ”

Initially, coins were minted in Austrian towns such as Krems, Graz, Salzburg, Innsbruck, and Villach. In 1918, with the formation of the Republic of Austria, Vienna's principal Mint became the country's one and only mint. In 1989, the name of the Austrian Mint was officially changed and it became a subsidiary of the Austrian National Bank.

Austrian Mint Gold Coins

For more than 800 years, the Austrian Mint has been producing and manufacturing some of the highest quality gold coins. Austrian Mint gold coins have a variety of famous coin series, one of the most famous being the "Gold Corona", especially the 1915 Austrian 100 Corona Gold coin. Currently, the most popular coin series of the Austrian Mint is the Gold Philharmonic coin series.

The Philharmonic coin was first introduced to the world in 1989. In 2002, the coin had developed a euro face value. This Austrian Gold Philharmonic was minted to celebrate the Austrian Philharmonic Orchestra. BOLD Precious Metals has different Austrian gold coin sizes, such as 1/10 oz., ¼ oz., ½ oz., and 1 troy ounce of .9999 pure gold having face values of €10, €25, €50, and €100. BOLD has an Austrian Gold Philharmonic for you!

Gold Philharmonic coins

The Philharmonic coin, a tribute to the Austrian Philharmonic Orchestra, displays The Great Organ of the Golden Hall in Vienna's concert hall, the Musikverein, with the inscriptions, "Republic Osterreich," the coin's weight, face value, and year of release, on its obverse side. The reverse displays feature a wide array of musical instruments, encircled by the inscription, "Wiener Philharmoniker". These Philharmonic gold coins come in different weights such as 1 oz, 2 oz, and more. The Gold Philharmonic Bullion Series introduced their 1 oz and 1/4 oz sizes in 1989, and continued to expand fractional options during the ensuing years more fractional size includes:

1: 1989 - 1 Troy oz. € 100 (EUR) |

2: 1989 - 1/4 Troy oz. € 25 (EUR)

3: 1991 - 1/10 Troy oz. € 10 (EUR)

4: 1994 - 1/2 Troy oz. € 50 (EUR)

5: 2014 - 1/25 Troy oz. € 4 (EUR)

Austrian Mint Silver Coins

At one time, silver was more valuable than gold, but of course, this is no longer the case. Silver remains in high demand, however, because of its value as both a precious metal and as a component of many different products all at a much lower premium and cost than gold, platinum, and palladium.

The Austrian Mint has an impressive variety of silver coins for coin enthusiasts. Two of the most popular silver coins are the Knights Tales & 825th Anniversary and the Philharmonic. Choose BOLD Precious Metals for Austrian Mint pieces, all at the lowest prices online and with a simple and hassle-free checkout process.

The obverse of this Knight Tales coin series displays a stunning portrait that represents one of the five principles of knighthood. The reverse of the coin depicts a scene that shows that principle in action. Each coin will come in an excellent illustrated blister pack that features information about each coin in both English and german.

Silver Philharmonic Coins Online

The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is used as an inspiration for the design of the Philharmonic coins. From the mint:

“The coin was designed by Thomas Pesendorfer, the Austrian Mint’s chief engraver. For the reverse side, he chose eight characteristic orchestral instruments: four violins on either side of a cello in the foreground and the Viennese horn, the bassoon, and the harp behind. The obverse side features the famous pipe organ from the Goldener Saal of the Viennese Musikverein, recognized throughout the world as the backdrop to the Philharmonic’s New Year concerts. The organ case was designed by the architect Theophil von Hansen, who was responsible for the whole building. The original organ was built by Friedrich Ladegast in 1872 and since then the organ has been renovated and replaced on various occasions, the last being in 2011. Visually, the body of the organ remains unchanged despite technical alterations. Above the organ, the words “Republik Oesterreich” stand in a semi-circle, while the weight and purity of the coin, with the date of issue below, stand beneath the balustrade of the organ. At the bottom edge of the coin appears its face value. The edge of the coin is reeded.”
