This 2018 Fiji 5 oz Silver Terracotta Army bullion coin is perhaps Scottsdale Mint's most beautifully unique release of 2018! In their own words, it features "an antique-polished finish that push the boundaries of any coin on the market." Of course the subject of the Coin is certainly one of the most unique and unusual to be found in ancient history.
Hidden from the passage of time for well over 2,000 years, the Terracotta Army guarding the tomb of China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, was discovered in 1974. This was unquestionably one of the most astounding finds of antiquity ever unearthed. Remarkably well-preserved, the collection of life-size terracotta clay figures totaled over 8,000 fully armed soldiers, 130 chariots pulled by 520 horses and accompanied by calvary of another 150 horses. This fine army was commissioned by the emperor to guard him in the afterlife. Quite remarkably, each figure had unique personal characteristics, even down to their facial expressions.
The obverse displays the distinctive Fiji Coat of Arms, centered in the field, with the background beautifully antiqued and polished. Encircling the the image are the inscriptions "FIJI . 2018 . 5 TROY OZ . 999 SILVER . 2 DOLLARS."
The reverse features a view of Emperor Qin Shi Huang's massive Terracotta Army. This provides a sense of how meticulous the placement of each soldier was in their perfectly aligned rows. At the front of the scene stands a single figure. The soldier's close-up view clearly showcases the fineness of detail displayed in these ancient terracotta clay figures. Just imagine the time and artistic skill required to produce a life-sized army of 8,000 unique individuals. And that was only the beginning!
