The Chinese Sexagenary Cycle is an ancient method of calculating years, months, dates and time. Consisting of 10 heavenly stems and 12 earthly branches, a pairing of one character from the stem followed by another from the branch will derive the sexagenary number of a Chinese year. The 10 heavenly stems are each associated with the five elements – wood, fire, earth, metal, and water – while the 12 earthly branches are represented by one of the 12 Zodiac animals.
A legal tender offering of the Republic of Chad (Republique du Tchad), the obverse displays the Coat of Arms of Chad in front of a background depicting a tiger's stripes. An outer rim features the inscriptions are "REPUBLIQUE DU TCHAD" on the top while "10000 FRANCS CFA" is along the bottom. A Chinese symbol is on the left side of "REPUBLIQUE DU TCHAD," and another Chinese symbol is on the bottom between "10000" and "FRANCS CFA."
The reverse features a tiger emerging from the jungle, its face showing a determined and confident look and a front paw clawing at the border along the bottom. The tiger's fur is meticulously engraved, and you can almost feel its softness. The attention to detail is quite impressive, and the high relief brings the tiger to life! To the lower right of the tiger are the Chinese characters for "Ren Yen Year" inside of a red ink stamp to mark the 39th year of the cycle. A Chinese-style border encircles in tiger. On the righ side is inscribed "Tiger in the Forest" and the Chinese characters for the phrase to the right.
